Cover & Interior Design

Artist in the Allagash

Synopsis:

The book is the wilderness journal of Peter Yesis, Maine’s 2023 Artist in Residence in the Allagash Wilderness Waterway (AWW), and of his wife, Kim Yesis, the author, as they travel off-grid to paddle the waters to capture the beauty of Maine’s North Woods on canvas.

Role:                Cover design, typography, interior layout

Format:           Trade paperback, matte finish, (5.5" × 8.25")

Design: The book design highlights the artist’s effort to translate the wild beauty of nature into oil on canvas.

The front and back covers are a contiguous image cut from “Paddle Through”, one of the paintings resulting from the Residence, and faded. Over this, on the right side of the front cover, a paint brush reaches down with green paint that transforms into a tree branch to symbolize the artist’s challenge.

The interior design involves chapters that alternate between the artist’s voice, in abstracts, and the author’s narration, in journal entries, each voice in its own text format. Interspersed among these narratives are captioned images, newspaper clippings, recipes, photographs artist sketches, and lists, that required particular attention to develop a workable hierarchy of typography. For ease of reading, the primary text is more widely spaced.
